Watch it again Wednesday: The Thing

The thing was a 1982 horror film from the John Carpenter.  It is a story about some government workers in  Antarctica who come across some Swedes shooting at a dog on the ice.  After investigating this crazy Swedes the find out that they found something huge buried in the ice.  This thing in the ice turns out to be an alien that can mimic any dna.   So after they discover this, trust starts running short in this Antarctic station.

This movie is brilliant on several different levels.  First of all, it is a monster film.  There are some pretty gruesome monster scenes and the special effects are good for a film of its time.  The next level of brilliance is the psychological horror aspect.  None of the people in station can trust each other after they discover what the monster can do.  They begin to develop tests to discover who is the alien.  Not too mention there is the fact that they have to keep this dna replicating monster from the mainland because it would take no time at all before this one organism replicated and destroyed society.  The third level of brilliance: Kurt Russell and John Carpenter together.  ‘nuff said.

The Thing is a remake of an older film from the 50s or 60s.  This incarnation also inspired a Dark Horse comic which was fantastic.  And one of my favorite things that came from this movie was the Playstation 2 game that functioned as a sequel to the movie.  I recommend playing that too.

Happy Watching,

K
